It used to be that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was something adults got, and even then, you didn’t expect to see symptoms before you’d spent 15 or 20 years in the workforce (hacking away at a keyboard 40 hours a week), but now, according to a recent online news article, children are getting repetitive stress injuries like CTS, too. You probably won’t be surprised to find out the number one culprit is video games rather than too much homework.
The culprit? “It’s the video games,” says Dr. Woo-Ming. “Hours upon hours of playing can lead to similar effects we see in patients who work with computers or type for a living.”
The article says the best way to prevent serious trouble with CTS (and this goes for adults, too) is early detection. For more information, and links to the author’s site, read: Children Suffering From Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Related to Video Games.
